GradeGuide

we exist to help students
reach their full potential.

The Story

In November of 2016, The Michigan Daily Web team created a tool that would help students visualize the grade distributions of classes at the University of Michigan. The goal was simple: help students reach their full potential by providing them with the information they need to make smarter choices about their academic futures. At the time, it was a small data set — relatively few classes from a single college at the University. Seven semesters worth of data and countless hours of programming later, The Michigan Daily’s Grade Guide has grown to contain nearly every class across nearly every school and college within the University of Michigan.

Grade Guide allows students to view grade distributions for any class on offer at the University and to compare this data for up to four classes at once. The app helps students visualize this data through graphs and tables, allowing students to easily understand and compare the data from specific classes or semesters. This simple structure and functionality makes it easy for any and all students to examine the data and make an educated decision about what classes they’re interested in.

The team that created Grade Guide are dedicated members of the larger Michigan Daily Web Team. Founded in 2014, the Web Team is a group of driven, passionate, and creative students who are dedicated to each and every one of their projects. The team of 15, led by Jordan Wolff and Robert Lesser, is broken into five teams that work on different digital products for The Michigan Daily. Working on projects from data visualization to the main website, the web team works to expand the Michigan Daily’s digital presence. With both a daily and long term role, the Web Team helps push the boundaries of what’s possible for the students of the University of Michigan.
